Your FrancisCorps experience begins at the Volunteer House, the place you will call home for the next year. Please plan on arriving by 4pm. That will give you a little time to relax and rest. We will have a picnic at around 5pm. Your parents and/or friends are welcome to attend! You can spend the day moving in your things, unpacking, and settling in to your new home.
A special Commissioning Liturgy will be held at the Franciscan Church of the Assumption at 10:00 am. This is a ‘send off’ Mass and blessing for you and your fellow FrancisCorps 22 volunteers. A little meet and greet will take place over coffee and donuts in the Friary following Mass. Afterwards, a special ‘house blessing’ will take place at the FrancisCorps residence. All parents, family and friends are welcome to attend the Commissioning Liturgy and house blessing. After the house blessing, final hugs are given and goodbyes are said, so you and your fellow volunteers can rest and prepare to hit the road for Maryland the next day!
You and your fellow volunteers will be introduced to FrancisCorps and each other! During this Orientation Week, Ellicott City, Maryland will be called home. On Monday, August 5th we will have the opportunity to visit the Poor Clare Sisters community in New Jersey on our way to Maryland. These monastic women represent the Second Order of the Franciscan Family (more to come on that during orientation!) and they pray for you throughout your FrancisCorps experience.
We will return back to Syracuse and attend the 4pm Mass at Assumption Church!
You and your community will have time to relax, continue to unpack, explore your new surroundings, discuss house responsibilities, grocery shop, and continue to get settled as you prepare for the coming week.
It’s time to get to work! This will be your first day of service at your site!
