Urgent Help for New Jersey Needed

November 10, 2012

FrancisCorps ’14 volunteers respond to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation in New Jersey and Staten Island.

Our Franciscan Friars have 3 friaries and parishes on the Jersey Shore. Two of them are in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights, NJ.  These two communities have been completely evacuated because of the dangerous situation with the gas lines and toxic waste in the streets and the need to reconstruct the infrastructure.  Our friars, who were given 1 hour to leave, have been told not to expect to return in less than 6-9 months!
Some of those friars have regrouped in our third parish of St. Peter’s in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. There under the direction of the local friary Guardian and Pastor, Friar Bob Benko, the friars and parishioners will be distributing much needed items to the community.
We also  have a friary on Staten Island, which thanks be to God only had  damage to some trees and the outdoor statue of St. Francis. However the local community is in despair of assistance.
In response to these needs our FC 14 volunteers are collecting cleaning supplies such as: work gloves, rubber gloves, rakes, shovels, goggles, heavy duty trash bags, mops, brooms, sponges, hand sanitizer, dish detergent, bleach, disinfectant, diapers, batteries (C & D type) and most useful are gift cards to Home Depot, Lowe’s and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
The FrancisCorps will be taking these items and cards down to New Jersey and Staten Island.  If you are local in Syracuse you can drop off those cleaning supplies at Assumption Church. Also, and especially if you are at a distance, please send us gift cards for Home Depot, Lowe’s and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
For more information contact Friar Rick at 315.706.8260.  Mail gift cards to FrancisCorps PO Box 11166, Syracuse NY 13218  THANK YOU.
