FrancisCorps volunteers reflect deeply on the experiences they are having in service and in community. In this reflection, Marie considers what the route she takes to get home says about her life in community.
Marie is spending her FrancisCorps experience serving at The Bishop Foery Foundation. The Bishop Foery Foundation (BFF) has been running programs for low-income families of the Southside of Syracuse since 1946. BFF is an after school community youth center run by Catholic Charities of Onondaga County. The most basic characteristic of the Bishop Foery Foundation is their concern for youth, expressed specifically through programs that promote educational and social growth.
The responsibilities at BFF include organizing and leading after school programming for pre-kindergarten through middle school children through educational and recreations outlets that enhance communication, emotional, cognitive and physical skills. The volunteer will also provide assistance to the “Teen Program” for the older students that take place two nights a week. BFF is well suited for a male or female student and no specific background is required. It may be of particular interest to students who are interested in education, community organizing and social work.
