Saint Francis of Assisi is a remarkable saint in that people’s love for him transcends religions, cultures and centuries. What is it about him that makes him so popular? Perhaps it’s the crazy mix of radical living of the Gospel with a deep care and respect for every person, for every creature and for all of creation. Perhaps it’s the endless dedication and love of the poor mixed with the joyful songs that were always on his lips. Who knows, it could be that ability to challenge himself, the friars and even the Church to conversion while never, every being judgmental.
What about you? What is it about Saint Francis that you love the most?
During this day of celebration, take a moment to reflect on Francis and let’s all make a deliberate choice to do something good for someone else today.. perhaps an unsolicited compliment, a gesture of kindness, or cutting someone some slack… whatever it may be… give thanks for Francis and put our FrancisCorps motto into action. Preach the Gospel. If necessary use words.
A Blessing for St. Francis Day
May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers,
half-truths and superficial relationships
so that you may live deep within your heart.
May God bless you with anger at injustice,
oppression and exploitation of people,
so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.
May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer pain,
rejection, hunger and war,
so that you may reach out your hand
to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.
May God bless you with enough Franciscan foolishness
to believe that you can make a difference in the world,
so that you can do what others claim cannot be done
to bring justice and kindness to all our children and the poor.
