FrancisCorps | Syracuse, NY

Welcome FC 21!

We are so pleased to welcome the 6 young women and men who are part of the 21st group of FrancisCorps! On Sunday, August 4th, they were commissioned at the Franciscan Church of the Assumption to live like St. Francis and allow themselves to be forever changed by this experience. Following Commissioning Mass, FrancisCorps staff and volunteers participated in a week long Orientation Retreat in Ellicott City, Maryland, where we learn more about each other, life in community and the Franciscan charism. The first day of service took place Monday, August 13th at the various placement sites found below:

Elias Arias (Alajuela, Costa Rica) will serve at the Assumption Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen.

Lauren Chacon (El Paso, TX) will serve at Francis House.

Caroline Friedmann (Bloomington, IL) will serve at Northside CYO / Refugee Resettlement.

Tanner Loper (Newport News, VA) will serve at Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter.

Kate Timmermann (St. Louis, MO) will serve at Assumption Church doing Community Development.

Stephanie Vogelman (Philadelphia, PA) will serve at Downtown Cathedral Emergency and Hospitality Services.

Please pray for them and all the individuals they will minister this year!

On Sunday, August 19th FrancisCorps will have the immense blessing of commissioning our 20th group of amazing volunteers! The commission mass will be held at the Franciscan Church of the Assumption, 812 N. Salina Street, Syracuse, NY at 10AM. All are invited to attend!

With graduation in the rear-view mirror, you have been considering what next year will bring.  With FrancisCorps you know you will spend a year living and serving the poor like St. Francis, but what if I said you’d also meet St. Francis?  Beginning next year, FrancisCorps volunteers will travel to Assisi, Italy, the home of St. Francis!  There you will get to experience what it means to “Preach the Gospel and if necessary use words” in an exciting new way!  We still have opportunities to serve in Syracuse, NY and if you apply today we will get you decision in a week!

After much reflection, prayer and consideration, FrancisCorps will suspend operation in Costa Rica beginning with the 2018-2019 service year.  Shifting realities and a dramatic decrease in the interest shown in the Costa Rica experience by potential volunteers have led us to conclude that FrancisCorps cannot continue to ensure our high standards for the volunteer experience at our international location.  We are forever grateful to the Friars, service site partners, and many individuals who welcomed us into the Costa Rican community 13 years ago and who provided support to the 58 young men and women who were blessed to serve that community.

Moving forward we are planning a number of exciting changes to enrich the Syracuse volunteer experience including a redesigned retreat program and, beginning with the 2018-2019 service year, the incorporation of a pilgrimage to Assisi for volunteers.  This pilgrimage will also be open to FrancisCorps alum.  Through this further growth and investment in the Syracuse volunteer experience, FrancisCorps will continue to grow and expand in intentional and meaningful ways as we continue to evaluate how and where we provide the FrancisCorps experience, both in the United States and internationally.  FrancisCorps will continue to work hard to provide a service experience that changes the lives of not just those served but also those who serve.

The mission of FrancisCorps is Gospel service!  As brothers and sisters to those in need, FrancisCorps volunteers share their gifts and talents in a year-long, faith-based Catholic-Christian community in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi.

FrancisCorps volunteers will apply their experience of service, community, and the values of Francis and Clare of Assisi to their careers, relationships, and community, and so help build a more just, peaceful, and fraternal society.

We’re turning 20 and we want you to be a part of it!

This coming year we welcome our 20th group of FrancisCorps volunteers!  We will be marking this milestone in a special way from Friday evening, July 19, 2019 until Sunday, July 21, 2019.  This weekend of events will include a celebratory banquet and we are excited to announce that joining us will be guest presenter, Franciscan Friar, Fr. Dan Horan, OFM, a highly sought after speaker on young adults and Franciscan Spirituality!  Mark your calendars now and keep a look out for more information on the events in the coming months!

Friar Rick and Sister Barbara Jean Commission FC 19

On Sunday, August 20th, 11 amazing young men and women answered the call to serve those in need and were commissioned as the 19th group of FrancisCorps volunteers at Assumption Church in Syracuse! In the last week and a half these volunteers have begun the process of building intentional community, forging a bond that they will continue to strengthen throughout the year.  After the commissioning mass, the volunteers spent time learning about St. Francis of Assisi, the FrancisCorps experience, and of course, one another at the Spirituality and Nature Center at Alverna Heights. Later in the week, we had a day filled with joy and laughter as we traveled to Chesterfield, New Jersey to meet the Poor Clare Sisters,

whom blessed the volunteers before sharing the importance of St. Clare on the Franciscan charisma.

FC 19 with the Poor Clares!

After returning to Syracuse, the Syracuse volunteers settled into their new home and prepared to embark on their first week of service and the Costa Rican volunteers traveled to their new home for the year in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Over the past few days, the Costa Rica volunteers visited their work sites, met the Friars, had a cooking lesson and began to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings. Now after a successful orientation both the Syracuse and Costa Rica communities have begun their service, providing for and building relationships with those in need. Please keep these dedicated men and women in your prayers as they preach the Gospel, if necessary using words!

On Sunday, August 20th FrancisCorps will have the immense blessing of commissioning our 19th group of amazing volunteers!  The commission mass will be held at the Franciscan Church of the Assumption, 812 N. Salina Street, Syracuse, NY at 10AM.  All are invited to attend!
