200 friars gather to celebrate

May 5, 2014

photoToday the Franciscan Friars Conventual of the Immaculate Conception Province who are the sponsors of FrancisCorps are merging with St. Anthony of Padua Province of the same community. These two groups of friars have long worked together and so this union is the fulfillment of years of cooperation and friendship.

The new Province of Our Lady of the Angels will come into being today, May 5th 2014 at 5:00 PM with the declaration by our Minister General, Friar Marco Tasca, OFM Conv. who is with us from Rome.

Then the First Ordinary Chapter of the new province of the OLA will officially begin. A chapter is a gathering of the 200 friars for the purpose of review of the last term (usually 4 years), election of leaders and planning for the future.

Saint Francis of Assisi set up a very democratic process of governance for the friars and so during the Chapter all assignments and offices cease. During the chapter all authority is vested the friars gathered together as a Chapter. This is truly a unique moment in our common life… and pretty cool too!

The friars, in preparation for this Chapter have had many meetings and discussion. Our ministry to “emerging generations” and especially to young adults is a top priority.  FrancisCorps is at the heart of such a ministry.

Please keep all the friars in prayer during this week of chapter that they may discern well the will of God… and do it!
