John Doughton is a 22 year old native of Homewood, AL. He is a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he was a Philosophy and Pre-med major. John has volunteered with Latino and African-American children in South Bend and with Boys and Girls Club of Greenville, NC. Last summer, he lived and worked in Phnom Penh, Cambodia where he taught English and also volunteered at an orphanage for HIV-positive children. John literally comes to FrancisCorps from Guatemala where he has been for the past two months studying Spanish. He’s very excited about using his Spanish skills as he travels to Costa Rica to be an Assistant at Albergue San Gabriel, a day clinic for terminally and chronically ill children and their families. John has deferred medical school to participate in FrancisCorps and knows this placement will provide unique hands on experience and prepare him for the future. “Through service I have learned how to better love, and a motivation for this year of service is to continue this learning process. Also, my current understanding of how best to live out the Gospel lines up directly with FrancisCorps’ method of ministry. I try to glorify God in all that I do, but currently I would rather demonstrate that to people than tell them about it. I do not shy away from spiritual discussions, but like St. Francis, I would rather preach through deed and lifestyle.”
