FrancisCorps, Costa Rica UPDATE. . . February, 2006
Brother Jim, Michelle (FrancisCorps Assistant) and FrancisCorps Family "dad," Dan Accordino, recently returned from a successful trip to Costa Rica in February. The three helped to lead the volunteers' Re-Orientation retreat upon their return to Costa Rica post-holiday break. Bro. Jim, Michelle and Dan also had the opportunity to visit FrancisCorps ministry sites, meet with site directors, and evaluate the overall FrancisCorps experience in Costa Rica to-date.
And the take-home message from this voyage? FrancisCorps, Costa Rica is alive and well! The volunteers have all worked very hard to establish new roles at their placement sites and develop relationships with staff and clients. As a result, St. Francis College (Susan's placement), Albergue San Gabriel (Adam's placement), and a new site, Hogar Luz (Dan's placement), would all like to welcome FrancisCorps to their ministries again next year.
As FrancisCorps has taken root in Costa Rica, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the volunteers, their ministries, and the Friars, we are preparing to help the FC experience grow. A new placement site was additionally 'investigated' during this February trip as a potential ministry placement for one of next year's volunteers. Casa de María Auxiliadora (aka "Casa de La Virgin"), is a multi-faceted ministry run by the Salesian Sisters which focuses its efforts mainly on education, medicine, housing and childcare for the underserved of San José.
