There are a few placements available at Casa de María Auxiliadora for a FrancisCorps Volunteer. Casa de María Auxiliadora (aka “Casa de la Virgin”) is a multi-faceted ministry run by the Salesian Sisters which focuses its efforts mainly on education, medicine, housing and childcare for the underserved of San José. The volunteer must have a high level of proficiency in the Spanish language to work in Costa Rica.
Assistant Daycare Coordinator
Casa de María Auxiliadora is beginning a program in 2006 called (the closest translation from spanish) “Women for Women.” In such a program, the staff at La Casa will provide day programming for children of underserved women (ages 1-6), such that those women may seek employment during the day. La Casa will also develop “life-skills” programs to help the same women with their daily activities and with their job searches. In this ministry at La Casa de Maria, a Franciscorps Volunteer (preferably female) would assist in developing and providing both components of the program.
Boarding School Program Assistant & Tutor
La Casa also runs a boarding school for girls who come from difficult family or home situations, and have been expelled from the public school system in San José. In addition to providing room and board, the Salesian Sisters teach these young women academic classes and life skills/crafts. A FrancisCorps Volunteer would, with the sisters, assist the girls with school work and home work during the day, guide them in their chores, and accompany and assist them in learning various skills, and possibly develop new programs.
