L’Arche is an intentional family of people with and without disabilities who share life in a community of faith. L’Arche Syracuse currently has three houses that serves the “core members” who are men and women with developmental disabilities. This is a community that works to spread the message and the importance that each person has his/her own uniqueness. The responsibilities at L’Arche include forming and developing deep relationships with core members and other staff, enhancing the growth of each core members through day-to-day activities, transportation of core members to jobs and appointments and daily assistance with meal preparation and hygiene. This site is well suited for a male or female volunteer and no special background is required. L’Arche may be of special interest to students who have interest in working with peoples with disabilities, nursing, social work,gerontology and community organizing. The volunteer at L’Arche does need a valid driver’s license.
Almost every single volunteer who has worked at L’Arche has gone on to volunteer a second year at L’Arche or has gone to work for them. It’s a life changing experience.
