On Sunday, August 20th, 11 amazing young men and women answered the call to serve those in need and were commissioned as the 19th group of FrancisCorps volunteers at Assumption Church in Syracuse! In the last week and a half these volunteers have begun the process of building intentional community, forging a bond that they will continue to strengthen throughout the year. After the commissioning mass, the volunteers spent time learning about St. Francis of Assisi, the FrancisCorps experience, and of course, one another at the Spirituality and Nature Center at Alverna Heights. Later in the week, we had a day filled with joy and laughter as we traveled to Chesterfield, New Jersey to meet the Poor Clare Sisters,
whom blessed the volunteers before sharing the importance of St. Clare on the Franciscan charisma.
After returning to Syracuse, the Syracuse volunteers settled into their new home and prepared to embark on their first week of service and the Costa Rican volunteers traveled to their new home for the year in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Over the past few days, the Costa Rica volunteers visited their work sites, met the Friars, had a cooking lesson and began to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings. Now after a successful orientation both the Syracuse and Costa Rica communities have begun their service, providing for and building relationships with those in need. Please keep these dedicated men and women in your prayers as they preach the Gospel, if necessary using words!
